Fr. Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R., a co-founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and Five-Postulator for the Cause of Sainthood for Archbishop Fulton Sheen, gave an introduction to the film showing of the documentary "Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: Servant of All". The film showing that was held on October 18, 2010 at the Rochester Room was an initiative of the Education Committee of the Parish Council of St. Thomas More Parish as part of the More Hot Topics program.
Pope John Paul II in 1979 called Archbishop Sheen “a loyal son of the Church” who had “written and spoken well of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Those words – spoken and written - are as relevant today as they were during his lifetime.
For his heroic and extraordinary virtues in living and spreading the Gospel and helping others to do the same, Archbishop Sheen, who is buried in the crypt at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, has been declared a “Servant of God,” the first of the four steps in the canonization process.

This presentation was held on September 12, 2010 by Andrew Bieszad at the St. Thomas More Parish as part of the continuing More Hot Topics which is an initiative of the Education Committee of the Parish Council.
Muslims and Catholics comprise two of the world’s three monotheistic religions that share belief in one God. There are differences in these two faiths, however, in how that belief is expressed. So what is Islamic theology, how does it compare with catholic teaching, and how do our perspective beliefs shape our view about each other? Mr. Bieszad has conducted educational seminars on Islam since 2007. Two of his articles that touch on aspects of theological differences of the faiths have been published – Church Honors Lebanese Civil War Martyrs (Cedar News, July 13, 2008) and The Secular Islam Summit Conference Report (TELOS, Summer 2007). He previously served as an Islam and Catholic-Muslim relations advisor to the National Catholic Students Coalition – the American branch of Pax Romana.

CLOUD OF WITNESSES: Dead People I Knew When They Were Alive
Father George Rutler in his latest book, Cloud of Witnesses (2010), presents a collection of portraits of characters and personalities he has encountered as a priest. His works usually show Catholics - now part of the North American mainstream - as often being pulled in different directions by the culture wars, with large segments seriously tempted towards liberal Protestantism and with just as many liberal Protestants lapsing into agnosticism or morphing into Evangelicals. In his new book, his range of characters stretches from Mother Teresa to Queen Elizabeth, from Barbara Cartland to Robert Frost, from the parish secretary to Cardinal Lustiger - a Jewish archbishop of Paris, and from a university chaplain to Billy of Engine Company 21. He will discusses these and other interesting characters at the MORE Hot Topics series held on May 10, 2010 at the Church of St. Thomas More.
